A new study just published on Feb 2011 in the journal of cancer makes a strong argument for applying hyperbaric oxygenation therapy (HBOT) for those patients who have had either surgery or radiation therapy for brain tumors. The study followed patients who had been treated with HBOT and there was a marked improvement in cognitive [...]

General Patient Protocol:

Step 1: Support and protect the body chemistry

  1. Diet:
  • Always good to look at low allergenic foods. Attached is a handout on hypoallergenic foods. This along with known food reactions by history should be followed as best as possible during any therapy. These foods can cause more inflammation in the body and thereby reduce the effectiveness of treatment programs designed for enhancing growth and development. Try to also get a variety of foods, particularly fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid all foods, particularly fruits, veggies, and others that contain high levels of toxins like pesticides. Organic foods are highly recommended during this program due to the high association of pesticides and other chemicals to Parkinson’s disease.
  1. Sleep is an important factor in brain development. It is also the time when we repair from injuries. It is a very good idea to make sure that we get adequate night-time sleep. Night-time is when hormones like melatonin is at its peak. Meletonin crosses the blood brain barrier and has an important antioxidant effect.
  1. Correct Body pH levels:

  • Digestive Tract (Stomach pH): The pH of your stomach should optimally be acidic. By having the right amount of stomach acid, the body can absorb nutrients at their peak absorbance. In addition, this will promote the growth and function of healthy bacteria while discouraging the growth of harmful bacteria and other organisms in the body. This includes but is not limited to Candida, pathogenic bacteria, parasites, worms etc. To check your stomach acid levels, follow the hydrochloric acid supplementation test sheet. If the levels are low, then use the appropriate dose on the handout to take during each meal. Please note that the number of capsules should not exceed 7 capsules.
  • 1st Morning Urine pH: Your body tightly regulates the pH levels in the blood for maintaining life. When we are introduced to acidic environments it is our body tissues that are most compromised to keep the blood levels consistent. The significance is that when the body tissue is compromised by having an acidic pH, then the function, particularly the oxygen uptake of the cells in those tissues is significantly diminished. To check your body pH levels, take a first morning pH sample. For the body to function well in an alkaline state, the 1st morning ph should be 6.4-7. If the levels are lower, then I would suggest taking the pH trio kit for a 2-month period. This should be enough to get the body pH back to a healthy alkaline state.
  1. Check for heavy metal accumulation in the body: It is recommended to perform a provocative heavy metal test to give us the most information. We find that if this level is high, we should immediately begin a heavy metal detoxification program. This has made tremendous differences on all of the patients that I have seen with Parkinson’s disease. These patients have made considerable improvements following the removal of these metals.
  1. Nutritional supplementation is extremely important particularly in essential fatty acids, essential amino acids, and anti-oxidants. I normally recommend for this to be corrected by
    • Hemp protein: 1 scoop,1-2 times per day. It is essential to get broad spectrum amino acids from high quality protein sources in order for the body to help eliminate toxic metals and other chemicals/pesticides stored in the body. In addition protein is necessary for growth and development, not only physically but also mentally, and for all body functions including the liver, immune system, brain, circulation (all of which are of prime importance for the Parkinson patient.
    • Basic essential vitamin pack: 1 pack per day with meals. This nutritional package would help to support the full nutritional chemistry required by all cells in the human body; thereby enhancing our concurrent treatment program. These packs contain all the necessary nutrients to survive in today’s world and in the right forms, amounts, and quality.
  1. Support all 5 organs of elimination:
    • Bowels: If constipated, make sure that this is corrected. Please note that NO DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM SHOULD BEGIN WITH A CONSTIPATED PERSON. Additional Fiber, Water and Magnesium in the diet should make a significant improvement
    • Skin: Make sure that our skin is not in contact with or in an environment rich in heavy metals or other harmful chemicals. Also, we want our sweat glands to remain open. Any sweating program including exercise will help this process
    • Lungs: Again, just like the skin, we make sure that we are not breathing in any metals or other harmful chemicals. Additionally, deep breathing exercises can help to further the elimination process

.

    • Urine: Plenty of clean water is required to help facilitate this excretion organ
    • Liver: The liver is an organ that needs to be functioning at its peak performance. To insure this I would recommend an additional liver support supplement called Liver: To be taken 3 capsules before bed.

Step 2: Actively excrete harmful metals/chemicals out of body

  1. Chelation Therapy:  One of the most destructive compounds towards brain development and growth is heavy metal toxicity. If these levels are high, there are a number of options that you have to help excrete these harmful metals out of your body. Here are a few options that I would recommend for treatments:
    • The first would be EDTA chelation therapy. This program consists of a 1½ -3 hour intravenous administration of EDTA along with vitamins and minerals. This process is repeated in a tight schedule of 1-2 times per week for anywhere between 3 and 6 months. I normally recommend a series of 30 treatments before re-evaluating.
    • The second would be DMSA therapy. The program would consist of a 2 week cycle where DMSA capsules would be prescribed for 3 days consecutively, followed by 11 days without any DMSA. This 2 week cycle can be continued for up to 14 cycles. If you choose this program, then the DMSA would be taken in 3-4 equally divided doses during the 3 days of the DMSA cycle and the total daily dose would be dependant on body weight
    • The third option would be IV DMPS therapy. The program for this treatment would consist of 1 treatment per month for a total of 6 treatments. The administration of the IV normally takes 20 minutes.

Please remember that DMPS does not cross the blood-brain barrier. It is for this reason, you may want to consider a combination, where DMPS and/or EDTA is started for the 1st few months and then replaced by DMSA.

  1. Intravenous Glutathione Therapy: This is an essential treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease.  Intravenous Glutathione Therapy has been shown to increase speech and decrease rigidity and improve walking functionality in Parkinson’s sufferers. It has been well established that patients with Parkinson’s disease have lowered levels of glutathione in their brains.  Interestingly, the less glutathione a person has, the more severe the symptoms of Parkinson’s.  The type of glutathione that is seen to be low in these patients is the negatively charged or “reduced” form.  In a landmark study, glutathione was given intravenously to patients who were not receiving other therapy for Parkinson’s.  The patients did not receive conventional therapy for two to four months after the glutathione, yet disability was reduced by 42% over that time. This is a simple procedure that is routinely prescribed 3 times per week and takes only 20 minutes to administer.
  1. Peat hyperthermia treatment: This is one of my favorite treatments to both enhance circulation and to have a tremendous detoxification effect. I would begin this treatment as soon as possible to begin mobilizing and excreting heavy metals and other toxic compounds out of the body. The treatment program that I would recommend here would be 3 times per week for a 2-month program. That would be approximately 21 total treatments. Please note that these treatments can be performed cost-effectively in your own home provided that there is a bathtub. I also would recommend that these treatments be performed at night before bed to have the greatest therapeutic effect. It would be good to evaluate this program after the 2 months have expired. If we were on the oral DMSA therapy, then it would be advisable to perform this treatment program for 3 days before beginning DMSA and the first 2 days of taking the DMSA. This would mean taking the treatment daily for 5 days during each 2-week cycle.
  1. Far Infrared Sauna Therapy: This is an excellent way to sweat out harmful chemicals and metals from the body. This therapy should be done on a daily level and for 1-hour intervals; however, there are some patients that will perform this procedure up to 3 hours per day and have received remarkable improvements from this protocol.
  1. Supplements:
  • Heavy Metal Nano-Detox: If there is heavy metal toxicity, then this is an all-natural form of nutrients that have the ability to bind and excrete harmful metals. This can be done in addition to or in replacement of the DMSA.
    • DHLA Nano-Plex ½ teaspoon 2 times per day. This will help to protect the body from excess free radical damage caused by heavy metal removal program. This nutrient is a key antioxidant in the body and will actually cross the blood-brain barrier and protect our brain from free radical damage. The reason why this nutrient is so important is that during the heavy metal removal program, the metals that are in the brain causing damage and delays in development can cause more damage during their excretion down the neuronal tract if we do not have enough brain antioxidant support. Regardless of heavy metal or chemical toxicity, this nutrient has proved valuable to the Parkinson patient.
    • Glutathione: 1 capsule 3 times per day. This nutrient is as important to the Parkinson patient as is Dopamine. As on option to, or in addition to, the intravenous glutathione therapy, this stabilized form of glutatthione is a simple way in oral form to increase our body reserves of this important nutrient. It is quite clear that glutathione has a major protective role in our brain, particularly the substatia nigra, which is the affected area in Parkinsons.
    • Superoside dismutase. 1 capsule 2 times per day. This enxyme is also important in having a protective role in PD.
    • Vitamin C: 1 capsule 3 times per day. A little extra of natural vitamin C can have a major impact in slowing the progression of Parkinson. Patients with Parkinson’s disease were found to be deficient in vitamin C. (Yapa 1992) Supplementation with vitamin C was found to postpone the need for medication in patients with early Parkinson disease by an average of 2.5 years, representing the ability to slow the progression of the disease. (Fahn 1992)
    • CoQ10: 1 capsule 3 times per day. This nutrient has shown in repeated scientific studies its worth and value in the Parkinson patient.
    • Meletonin: 1 capsule per day. A natural antioxidant that is a hormone relesed by the pituitary gland and is a night-time repairative hormone. This crosses the blood-brain barrier and like the other antioxidants in the brain, can help protect the brain from further damage, particularly during sleep.

Step 3: Repair the damaged brain

  1. Hyperbaric oxygenation therapy is one of the best treatments for getting more oxygen to the brain for growth and development. It will also cause new blood vessels to be formed to any damaged tissue with less oxygen tensions. This process however takes adaptation time by the body. Immediate effects can be seen however it is the long-term effects that we are trying to achieve. That is why I would recommend 40 HBOT treatments with treatments lasting 60 minutes in duration and performed up to 2 times per day. This is the program that I have seen the most success with.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has 2 major affects in Parkinsons. The first is that it helps in the detoxification process. The second is that it puts enough oxygen in the brain that the body up-regulates its natural anti-oxidant systems. Additionally, with the creation of new blood vessels, it is quite obvious how that can benefit.
  1. Supplements:
  • Brain Complex: This is highly specific nutrients required by the brain for repair and function. Combined with the Basic Essential daily vitamin pack and the alpha lipoic acid, it makes for the best nutritional program towards brain repair and optimal/peak performance.
  • Cod Liver Oil: the brain is composed of 60% fat. During brain growth, repair and development, we need to have extra supplemental fats in good biological form. This oil is the perfect chemistry for the brain in this manner and is guaranteed not to contain heavy metals as most fish oils in the market do.
  • NADH: 1 capsule 3 times per day: There have been numerous published articles showing us the value of adding this natural compound into the protocol PD
    • DHLA Nano-Plex ½ teaspoon 2 times per day.
    • Glutathione: 1 capsule 3 times per day.
    • Superoside dismutase. 1 capsule 2 times per day.
    • Vitamin C: 1 capsule 3 times per day.
    • CoQ10: 1 capsule 3 times per day.
    • Meletonin: 1 capsule per day.
