A new study just published on Feb 2011 in the journal of cancer makes a strong argument for applying hyperbaric oxygenation therapy (HBOT) for those patients who have had either surgery or radiation therapy for brain tumors. The study followed patients who had been treated with HBOT and there was a marked improvement in cognitive [...]

This is an essential part of all cancer therapies. Our bodies are equipped with an immune system composed of white blood cells. It is clearly demonstrated in all medical text books that: 1) Natural killer cells are a cell line division of these white blood cells 2) these natural killer cells have the ability to FIND, TARGET, and KILL cancer cells. It therefore should be common sense that one definite approach to cancer treatments would be to both increase the number and activity of natural killer cells.
More than 50 mushroom species have yielded potential anticancer activity in laboratory or animal studies and of these; six have been investigated in human cancers. Two substances from the mushroom Coriolus versicolor – PSK (Polysaccharide-K) and PSP (Polysaccharide-Peptide) – have demonstrated the most promise. In Japanese trials since 1970, PSK significantly extended survival in several types of cancer. In double-blind trials, PSP significantly extended survival in esophageal cancer. PSP significantly improved quality of life, provided substantial pain relief, and enhanced immune status in 70-97% of patients with several types of cancer. PSK and PSP boosted immune cell production, relieved chemotherapy symptoms, and enhanced tumor attack by white blood cells. Their extremely high tolerability, lack of toxicity, proven benefits to survival and quality of life, and compatibility with chemotherapy and radiation therapy make them well suited for cancer management regimens.
The use of mushroom glucans and proteoglycans in cancer treatment. Kidd PM. ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE REVIEW, Feb 1, 2000; 5(1): 4-27.
The author has reported that of all mushrooms studied; Maitake Mushroom (Grifolia frondosa) has the strongest activity in tumor growth inhibition both in administered orally and into the abdomen. Through the 31 day oral administration, total remission of the tumor was visibly confirmed on four out of ten Maitake fed mice. The remaining six rodents also indicated almost 90% suppression rate compared to untreated mice. Most other mushroom extracts are reported ineffective when given orally. The results of human studies on Maitake D-fraction is reported which indicate strong potential of Maitake D-fraction for cancer treatment.
